Trouble is, the region&#8217;s states have proved reluctant, considering Islamic State more a \u00addistraction than the main game.<\/p>\n<p>The upshot is that the war against Islamic State is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/news\/world\/paris-attacks-is-all-out-war-what-islamic-state-wants\/story-fnb64oi6-1227615557187&amp;memtype=anonymous\">at its core a Western war<\/a> with, at best, measured support from regional \u00adpowers, friends and partners. The key \u00adexception is the Kurds, albeit Turkey is both enemy and ally.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, the war is making slow headway. On current trends the defeat of Islamic State appears about three years away, but post-Paris this now appears too long.
