{"id":10310,"date":"2023-11-15T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-14T22:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/?p=10310"},"modified":"2024-09-19T05:00:52","modified_gmt":"2024-09-18T19:00:52","slug":"southeast-asia-snapshot-62","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/southeast-asia-snapshot-62\/","title":{"rendered":"Southeast Asia Snapshot #62"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/tag\/sovinda-po\/\">SOVINDA PO<\/a>  |   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Thailand\u2019s ruling party elected Thaksin\u2019s daughter as party leader<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Thailand\u2019s ruling party \u2013 the Pheu Thai Party <a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Politics\/Thaksin-Shinawatra-s-daughter-elected-leader-of-Thailand-s-ruling-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2013 elected Paetongtarn Shinawatra<\/a>, who is the second daughter of the former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as their leader on 27 October 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paetongtarn Shinawatra <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/daughter-divisive-former-thai-prime-minister-thaksin-named-104420996\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was voted<\/a> into the position with 289 votes and one abstention in a meeting of executives and other members of the Pheu Thai Party. The previous leader \u2013 Chonlanan Srikaew \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/pmn\/news-pmn\/daughter-of-divisive-former-thai-prime-minister-thaksin-named-head-of-political-party-linked-to-him?utm_source=ground.news&amp;utm_medium=referral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resigned<\/a> for breaking a pledge that Pheu Thai would not form a government with any military-aligned parties. This election <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thaksin-shinawatra-paetongtarn-pheu-thai-party-leader-86a706a96f88f7408e2fe11c0947ee66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reasserted the overt leadership<\/a> of the Pheu Thai Party by the Shinawatra family and comes two months after Thaksin returned to the country after <a href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Politics\/Thai-election\/Thaksin-jailed-on-return-to-Thailand-after-15-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15 years of exile<\/a> to avoid a jail sentence in 2008.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/world\/daughter-of-divisive-former-thai-prime-minister-thaksin-named-head-of-political-party-linked-to-him-1.6619567?utm_source=ground.news&amp;utm_medium=referral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">among those to<\/a> congratulate the new party leader while Ms. Paetongtarn pledged to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thaksin-shinawatra-paetongtarn-pheu-thai-party-leader-86a706a96f88f7408e2fe11c0947ee66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bring the promised policies<\/a> to reality and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/thailands-ruling-party-chooses-shinawatra-new-leader-2023-10-27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stand by the people<\/a>. She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimsumdaily.hk\/daughter-of-jailed-billionaire-ex-prime-minister-thaksin-shinawatra-elected-leader-of-thailands-ruling-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emphasized the need<\/a> for the new administrative body of Pheu Thai to rejuvenate itself, reclaim its position as the people\u2019s leading choice, and modernize the party towards regaining its prominence. A political analyst Yuttaporn Issrachai says that this result \u201cis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/asia\/pheu-thai-elect-thaksin-daughter-paetongtarn-shinawatra-leader-3877631#:~:text=BANGKOK%3A%20Thailand's%20ruling%20party%20on,two%20years%20after%20entering%20politics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an effort to modernize the party<\/a>, but, in the end, the core of the party is still the same. It belongs to the Shinawatra clan\u201d. The Pheu Thai deputy leader Phumtham Wechayachai <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/thailand\/politics\/2672956\/paetongtarn-elected-new-pheu-thai-leader\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defended the move<\/a>, saying Ms Paetongtarn earned the leadership role because of her qualifications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Ms. Paetorntarn as its leader, the Pheu Thai is back under the Thaksin family leadership. Diversification for broad representation is crucial to dilute the public perception of the \u201cThaksinization\u201d of the Pheu Thai in the long run.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The US, UK, and Canada unveiled new sanctions on Myanmar junta supporters<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>On 31 October 2023, the United States (US), Canada, and the United Kingdom (UK) imposed new sanctions on the military junta of Myanmar, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/aseanplus\/aseanplus-news\/2023\/11\/01\/us-uk-canada-unveil-new-sanctions-on-supporters-of-myanmar-military\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aiming<\/a> at weakening its sources of support to Myanmar\u2019s military regime, and reducing its ability to buy weapons.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US <a href=\"https:\/\/vigourtimes.com\/us-imposes-targeted-sanctions-on-myanmar-juntas-profitable-oil-enterprise-a-defining-move\/#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">imposed sanctions<\/a> on Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE), prohibiting Americans from providing, exporting, or re-exporting financial services to MOGE. Moreover, Canada also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/myanmar-politics-usa-sanctions-canada\/canada-imposes-new-myanmar-related-sanctions-in-coordination-with-us-uk-idINO8N39X019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">placed sanctions<\/a> against the junta while also expanding its prohibition on the sale of aviation fuel to include a ban on shipping insurance for the transportation of aviation fuel to Myanmar. Furthermore, the UK also joined the US and Canada to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/us-uk-canada-unveil-new-sanctions-on-supporters-of-myanmar-military\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sanction five individuals and one entity<\/a> involved in providing financial services to the regime or supplying restricted goods.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/us-uk-canada-unveil-new-sanctions-on-supporters-of-myanmar-military\/7334702.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">urged<\/a> \u201cthe international community to step up action to address the worsening human rights, humanitarian, political, and economic crisis in Burma\u201d while this new round of sanctions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourconroenews.com\/news\/world\/article\/opponents-of-military-rule-in-myanmar-applaud-new-18461024.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">received applause<\/a> from the UN human rights expert and opponents of the junta government. The Canadian government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/americas\/us-canada-impose-additional-sanctions-on-myanmar\/3039562\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">states<\/a> \u201cthese additional measures come as part of a broader strategy seeking to exert coordinated, sequenced, and targeted pressure on the Myanmar regime while mitigating adverse impacts on civilians.\u201d Some viewed the sanctions <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Business\/wireStory\/opponents-military-rule-myanmar-applaud-new-sanctions-targeting-104531236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as important steps<\/a> forward with the ban hitting the junta\u2019s largest resource revenue. Despite these sanctions, the junta <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/oct\/31\/us-sanctions-myanmar-oil-gas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">did not respond<\/a> to any comment requests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sanctions will further weaken the junta\u2019s sources of revenues. However, this is not enough; continuous cooperations from ASEAN and the international community are imperative to choke Myanmar junta\u2019s stability effectively.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Singapore&#8217;s Prime Minister to step down before the next general election<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>On 5 November 2023, Singaporean Prime Minister (PM) Lee Hsien Loong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/11\/5\/singapores-lee-hsien-loong-says-he-will-step-down-as-early-as-next-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced his plan<\/a> to relinquish his leadership responsibility in the ruling People\u2019s Action Party (PAP) before the 2025 general election.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The role will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nst.com.my\/world\/region\/2023\/11\/975054\/singapore-pm-says-succession-happen-next-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">handed over to his deputy Prime Minister<\/a> (DPM) Lawrence Wong and the transition will happen by the party\u2019s 70<sup>th<\/sup> birthday next year. Wong was <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Business\/wireStory\/singapores-prime-minister-plans-step-hand-deputy-2025-104640849\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">picked by PAP<\/a> as the likely successor to Lee after then Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat, who was earlier tipped to succeed Lee, withdrew his nomination. Lee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/singapore-pm-says-succession-to-happen-before-next-election\/7342278.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will support the new Prime Minister<\/a> in any way he can, including helping Lawrence to fight and win the next general election. Wong had <a href=\"https:\/\/island.lk\/singapores-lee-hsien-loong-says-he-will-step-down-as-early-as-next-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proved himself to <\/a>be capable as the head of government during Singapore\u2019s battle against COVID-19. Under his leadership, Singapore achieved one of the world\u2019s lowest rates of illness and death making him the right person for the Prime Ministerial role.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PM Lee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/11\/05\/singapore-deputy-pm-wong-to-lead-ruling-party-before-general-election.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> he has \u201cfull confidence in Lawrence and his team and there\u2019s no reason to delay their political transition\u201d while Wong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2023\/11\/05\/asia-pacific\/politics\/singapore-pm-will-step-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> the party has a \u201cclear roadmap for what we need to do and how the PAP government can work with our people to help Singapore succeed\u201d and he is ready for the next assignment. Walid Jumblatt Abdullah, a political scientist at Nanyang Technological University, said \u201cthe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/singapore-deputy-pm-wong-lead-ruling-party-before-general-election-pm-2023-11-05\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safer thing to do<\/a> for the party would be for Lee to hand over after the general election and give Wong time to build rapport with the electorate\u201d while Bilveer Singh of National University of Singapore believed \u201cthe next general election <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/aseanplus\/aseanplus-news\/2023\/11\/05\/039i-have-faith-in-our-future-leaders039---singapore-pm-lee-plans-to-step-aside-in-2024-before-next-polls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is not about Lawrence Wong or Lee Hsien Loong<\/a>; it\u2019s about the PAP remaining not just in power, but dominant.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PM Lee&#8217;s planned leadership transition to DPM Lawrence Wong before the 2025 election signalled political continuity in Singapore.
