Sir Theodor Bray (1905-2000) \u2013 Griffith\u2019s First Chancellor<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 1970, Sir Theodor Bray accepted the challenge of the State Education Minister\u00a0of the time to plan a second University in Brisbane. From the outset, he was\u00a0intimately involved in the day-to-day work and development of the University. He\u00a0chaired Griffith University\u2019s Interim Council and First Council, and was elected\u00a0first Chancellor of the University in 1975. In the same year he was created a Knight\u00a0Bachelor for service to education.<\/p>\n

Under Sir Theodor\u2019s expert guidance, Griffith was planned and began teaching in\u00a0the climate of social change of the seventies. As Chancellor from 1975-1985, he was\u00a0committed to establishing a university that offered an alternative higher education\u00a0experience to that already available in Queensland.\u00a0This vision was reflected in Sir\u00a0Theodor\u2019s efforts to establish Australia\u2019s first School of Modern Asian Studies.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we\u00a0do nothing else in this university,\u201d he said, \u201cwe will teach Asian Studies and we willcultivate good relations between Asia and its neighbours around the Pacific Rim\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In all matters, Sir Theodor made the good of Griffith University his overriding\u00a0concern. His immersion in both the business and social life of the University grew\u00a0from a strong sense of obligation and genuine interest and affection for the institution,\u00a0its staff and students.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
