In mid-December it became apparent that China is <a href=\"http:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2016\/12\/new-weapons-on-chinas-artificial-islands-dont-violate-non-militarization-of-south-china-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">militarising<\/a> its newly built islands in the Spratly group.<span id=\"more-54177\"><\/span> Soon after this became public, former Indonesian foreign minister Marty Natalegawa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afr.com\/news\/marty-natalegawa-says-asean-being-torn-apart-as-china-gains-upper-hand-20161215-gtbqsw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> that the dispute might <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eastasiaforum.org\/2016\/05\/21\/china-divides-asean-in-the-south-china-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tear ASEAN apart<\/a>. A few days later a Chinese Navy ship \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2016\/12\/20\/china-returns-u-s-navy-unmanned-glider\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stole<\/a>\u2019 (or \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2016\/12\/18\/politics\/china-us-underwater-vehicle-south-china-sea\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discovered<\/a>\u2019, according to China) a US unmanned underwater vessel (UUV) some 450 metres from a US Navy oceanographic ship sailing off the Philippine coast.<\/p>\n<p>The UUV incident occurred outside China\u2019s nine-dash line territorial claim. The incident seemingly disregarded the procedures agreed upon in the US\u2013China Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea, which have previously worked well in avoiding confrontations. Most importantly, it also marked the first direct intervention \u2014 in tweet form \u2014 by the Trump presidency into the South China Sea imbroglio.<\/p>\n<p>These tweets suggested that the United States\u2019 South China Sea policy under Trump will become more assertive, just as China\u2019s policy did when President Xi Jinping took power.<\/p>\n<p>Trump seems set to focus the US\u2013China relationship on \u2018making deals\u2019. He is expected to adopt a transactional approach that aims to gain particular near-term outcomes important to him.
