{"id":3056,"date":"2017-02-03T09:28:47","date_gmt":"2017-02-02T23:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/?p=3056"},"modified":"2023-08-06T20:38:43","modified_gmt":"2023-08-06T10:38:43","slug":"advance-australia-where","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/advance-australia-where\/","title":{"rendered":"Advance Australia where?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/tag\/ian-hall\/\">IAN HALL<\/a> |<\/p>\n<p>The report in the Washington Post that President Donald Trump berated Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull over the refugee settlement deal and angrily ended their phone call has rightly caused consternation on both sides of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>Inevitably, it has also brought the Australia-United States defence alliance under scrutiny once more, but if one positive thing could come out of all the turmoil of the first few days of this Presidency, it might be that Australians start to think more creatively\u200a\u2014\u200aand not just along the well-worn lines laid out in the last few years\u200a\u2014\u200aabout its interests and how to secure and extend them.<\/p>\n<p>The first is that the relationship with the United States is hard to break. It is unlikely\u200a\u2014\u200athough, in a sign of the times, we also have to recognise that it is far from impossible\u200a\u2014\u200athe US would abrogate the <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/history.state.gov\/milestones\/1945-1952\/anzus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ANZUS Treaty<\/a> or cut Australia out of the <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lowyinstitute.org\/the-interpreter\/after-40-years-five-eyes-out-open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u2018Five Eyes\u2019<\/a> intelligence sharing arrangements. Nor is the level of US investment into Australia likely to diminish anytime soon, unless a major economic crisis occurs.
