{"id":3384,"date":"2017-05-25T15:00:56","date_gmt":"2017-05-25T05:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/?p=3384"},"modified":"2017-06-10T07:53:36","modified_gmt":"2017-06-09T21:53:36","slug":"abes-south-korea-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/abes-south-korea-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"Abe\u2019s South Korea challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Why democracy on the Peninsula presents a problem for Japan<\/h3>\n<p>South Korean President Moon Jae-in\u2019s push for peace on the Korean Peninsula threatens to undercut Shinzo Abe\u2019s framing of North Korea as a paramount threat to Japan and the international community, write Christian Wirth and Sebastian Maslow.<\/p>\n<p>Despite <a href=\"http:\/\/english.yonhapnews.co.kr\/news\/2017\/05\/21\/0200000000AEN20170521003054315.html\">condemning<\/a> North Korea\u2019s most recent missile launch as \u2018reckless and irresponsible\u2019, and ordering a \u2018stern response\u2019, South Korea\u2019s newly-elected president Moon Jae-in will strive to <a href=\"http:\/\/english.hani.co.kr\/arti\/english_edition\/e_national\/795728.html\">engage<\/a> his bellicose neighbour. This course of action is not only a popular demand, it also represents Korea\u2019s only way out of the impasse that could other otherwise end in all-out war.<\/p>\n<p>Even if US President Donald Trump may rethink his earlier statement and miss out on a chat with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/will-trump-share-a-burger-with-north-koreas-kim\/a-36399902\">over a burger<\/a>, Moon\u2019s reviving of the so-called <a href=\"http:\/\/large.stanford.edu\/courses\/2017\/ph241\/min2\/\">Sunshine engagement policy<\/a> has the potential to undercut Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe\u2019s framing of North Korea as a paramount threat to the security of Japan and the international community, to be deterred by all available means.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the victory of South Korean democracy casts Abe\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/the-pitfalls-of-asia-pacific-geopolitics\/\">deal<\/a> with the now imprisoned ex-president Park Geun-hye to \u2018finally and irreversibly\u2019 close the chapter on the so-called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.awf.or.jp\/e1\/korea.html\">comfort women<\/a> in a dubious light. The Abe government\u2019s continuing insistence on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2017\/05\/03\/national\/politics-diplomacy\/japanese-ambassador-urges-south-korea-remove-comfort-woman-statues\/\">removal of the statue<\/a> that faces the Japanese embassy in Seoul as a reminder of Tokyo\u2019s historical responsibility is particularly controversial, and displays a fundamental misjudgement of the political circumstances. Scrutinising Park\u2019s political legacy, the status of the bilateral <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-southkorea-japan-military-idUSKBN13I068\">General Security of Military Information Agreement<\/a> may also become subject to debate again, thus further tarnishing Abe\u2019s achievements.<\/p>\n<p>More than complicating diplomatic ties, however, the de facto regime change in South Korea could affect Abe\u2019s domestic political agenda.
