In this third post, Dr Layton considers the varied influences on China\u2019s approach to air power and it\u2019s focus on multi-domain \u2018firepower warfare\u2019.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In late October President Xi Jinping\u2019s \u201cThought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era\u201d was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/china\/19thcpcnationalcongress\/2017-10\/19\/content_33438132.htm\">written into<\/a>\u00a0the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s Constitution.\u00a0 In some respects Chinese air power follows a similar dictum. Ideas from beyond China are considered, modified and adapted to meet Chinese needs.<\/p>\n<p>In this, the People\u2019s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) long-term development owes much to Soviet and later Russian support, doctrine and arms sales.\u00a0 In some decades though such assistance has vanished initially through ideological differences and more lately over fighter aircraft intellectual property theft (<a href=\"http:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/feature\/china-stole-fighter-russia%E2%80%94-its-coming-the-south-china-sea-17087?page=show\">the J-11 saga<\/a>).
