{"id":4152,"date":"2018-04-06T12:00:43","date_gmt":"2018-04-06T02:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/?p=4152"},"modified":"2023-08-06T20:23:45","modified_gmt":"2023-08-06T10:23:45","slug":"debating-chinas-influence-in-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/debating-chinas-influence-in-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"Debating China&#8217;s influence in Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/tag\/ian-hall\/\">IAN HALL<\/a> |<\/p>\n<p>Stories of attempts by the People\u2019s Republic of China (PRC) to influence Australia\u2019s political processes, gather intelligence, or simply intrude into government and commercial IT networks have circulated for some time.<\/p>\n<p>Questions have been asked, for example, about friendships between Australian politicians, including a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/defence-rejected-minister-spy-link-concerns-20090506-avc4.html\">former Defence Minister<\/a>, and Chinese nationals or expatriates with connections to the Communist Party (CCP). Alarms have been rung about alleged cyber-intrusions into various systems, up to and including a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-pacific-12891484\">Prime Minister\u2019s email account<\/a>. It has even been\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2013-05-27\/asio-blueprints-stolen-in-major-hacking-operation\/4715960\">suggested<\/a>\u00a0that agents of the Chinese state stole the blueprints for the new Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) building in Canberra, plans that included details of the location of servers, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, these stories multiplied rapidly, culminating in a series of major reports compiled the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the\u00a0<em>Sydney Morning Herald<\/em>\u00a0(<em>SMH<\/em>).
