{"id":4222,"date":"2018-04-27T08:30:08","date_gmt":"2018-04-26T22:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/?p=4222"},"modified":"2023-08-08T11:07:58","modified_gmt":"2023-08-08T01:07:58","slug":"the-other-ethnic-minorities-in-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/the-other-ethnic-minorities-in-china\/","title":{"rendered":"The &#8216;other&#8217; ethnic minorities in China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/tag\/colin-mackerras\/\">COLIN MACKERRAS<\/a> |<\/p>\n<p>Among China\u2019s 55 state-recognised ethnic minorities, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iapsdialogue.org\/2017\/03\/10\/amplifying-tibetan-womens-voices-a-survey-of-contemporary-literary-works\/\">Tibetans<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iapsdialogue.org\/2017\/02\/16\/chinas-self-defeating-counter-terrorism-strategy-in-xinjiang\/\">Uyghurs<\/a>\u00a0get most media attention. Mostly negative, its focus is repression and human rights abuses.<\/p>\n<p>However, relations among China\u2019s other ethnic groups are good. Social hostilities are generally based not on ethnicity or race, but on other factors.<\/p>\n<p>The minority ethnic groups (<em>shaoshu minzu\u00a0<\/em>\u5c11\u6570\u6c11\u65cf) are just under eight percent of the national population (2010 census). The two most populous are the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/citeseerx.ist.psu.edu\/viewdoc\/download?doi=10.1.1.664.783&amp;rep=rep1&amp;type=pdf\">Zhuang<\/a>, most living in Guangxi, which borders Vietnam; and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/the-hui-chinas-preferred-muslims\/a-36699666\">Hui<\/a>, who are ethnically Chinese but Muslim by religion. Most of the minorities have their own language and culture.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The effects of modernisation and the rise of China are the increasing dominance of Chinese language and culture in the public sphere.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Official policy advocates\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.china-un.ch\/eng\/bjzl\/t176942.htm\">favourable policies<\/a>\u00a0(<em>youhui zhengce<\/em>\u00a0\u4f18\u60e0\u653f\u7b56) towards the minorities. State policy encourages the use of their languages and cultures, there are quotas for university entry for minorities, and they are less subject to population control than the Han.<\/p>\n<p>In the last decade or so some trends have affected China, including the minorities.\u00a0The main one is summed up as China\u2019s rise. The impact on the minorities is extensive. On the whole, this is positive, but there are also negative aspects.\u00a0The main positive effect is that the minority areas are growing more prosperous. Extreme poverty has traditionally affected minority areas disproportionately, and the eradication of absolute poverty does likewise.
