Almost three months to the day since\u00a0the Singapore summit<\/a>\u00a0between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and President Donald Trump, the White House has confirmed it is considering a request from Pyongyang for a second summit, this time possibly in Washington. But before looking ahead to what that might look like, observers would be advised to reflect on what the first summit achieved.<\/p>\n

In their\u00a0joint statement<\/a>, the US and North Korea endorsed the Singapore summit as “an epochal event of great significance in overcoming decades of tensions and hostilities between the two countries and opening up a new future”, so it’s timely to review how far we’ve come since June. Is there greater cause for optimism about security on the Korean Peninsula? Is North Korea more likely to roll back its nuclear program?<\/p>\n
