{"id":4876,"date":"2018-10-08T08:30:53","date_gmt":"2018-10-07T22:30:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/?p=4876"},"modified":"2023-08-08T08:30:50","modified_gmt":"2023-08-07T22:30:50","slug":"climate-change-at-the-frontlines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/climate-change-at-the-frontlines\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate change, at the frontlines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/tag\/wesley-morgan\/\">WESLEY MORGAN<\/a> |<\/p>\n<p>When Pacific island leaders gathered in Nauru this month, they issued a security declaration affirming climate change as the \u201csingle greatest threat\u201d to the region.<\/p>\n<p>That climate change is a threat to Pacific islands is in some ways obvious; indeed the climate change wording in the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/uploads.guim.co.uk\/2018\/09\/05\/1FINAL_49PIFLM_Communique_for_unofficial_release_rev.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boe Declaration on Regional Security<\/a>\u201d was derived from previous Forum leaders\u2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forumsec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/2013-Majuro-Declaration-for-Climate-Leadership.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">communiques<\/a>. What is new is the explicit recognition, in a\u00a0<em>security<\/em>\u00a0declaration, that climate change is the\u00a0<em>single greatest threat<\/em>\u00a0to the region.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-inner__quote--right\">\n<p>Leaders from Pacific islands have long campaigned for recognition of climate change as a security issue, and particularly as a threat to the survival of low-lying atoll nations. In 1991, for example, Pacific leaders warned that global warming and sea level rise placed the cultural, economic and physical survival of Pacific nations \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forumsec.org\/twenty-second-south-pacific-forum-palikir-pohnpei-federated-states-of-micronesia-29-30-july-1991\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at great risk<\/a>\u201d. Over the decades since, they have\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sdg.iisd.org\/news\/un-security-council-discusses-security-implications-of-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lobbied at the United Nations<\/a>\u00a0for climate change to be\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.samoagovt.ws\/2015\/08\/pm-the-un-security-council-open-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">understood as a security threat<\/a>.
