{"id":5200,"date":"2018-12-10T08:30:22","date_gmt":"2018-12-09T22:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/?p=5200"},"modified":"2023-08-06T14:07:41","modified_gmt":"2023-08-06T04:07:41","slug":"us-china-competition-is-all-about-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/us-china-competition-is-all-about-us\/","title":{"rendered":"US-China competition is all about us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/tag\/peter-layton\/\">PETER LAYTON<\/a>\u00a0|<\/p>\n<p>We are not entering a new Cold War, despite both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2018\/11\/16\/politics\/xi-pence-cold-war-apec-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chinese President Xi<\/a>\u00a0and US\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/josh-rogin\/wp\/2018\/11\/13\/pence-its-up-to-china-to-avoid-a-cold-war\/?utm_term=.e351be5c4c43\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vice-President Pence<\/a>\u00a0finding the term a useful rhetorical tool.\u00a0The Americans have decided to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/templatelab.com\/national-security-strategy-final\/\">compete<\/a>\u00a0against China because they think the last two decades of cooperation has failed.\u00a0The Trump Administration, though, is careful to say that competition does not mean conflict.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-inner__quote--right\">\n<p>Cooperation is where two states work together for the common good.\u00a0Conflict involves a clash between hostile entities. Competition is different to both. Competition is not between two alone but instead a contest between two states over a third party or object. A sporting analogy may help: athletes compete on a playing field to win a prize. They don\u2019t fight each other directly as during conflict but instead seek to gain an external object while denying it to the other.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The prize America and China both seek is clear: global leadership. They don\u2019t want to fight each other. Instead they are quarrelling over who leads the international system.
