Trump-led conservatism in the US and Brexit in the UK, as well as similar shifts towards protectionism in France and Germany, are evidence of this.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan and South Korea are both trade-oriented economic giants in Asia. Despite geographic proximity, however, the two seem to be heading in different directions in their political ideology.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-11-24\/taiwans-crucial-midterms-and-why-china-is-worried\/10518048\">election<\/a>\u00a0in November resulted in an overwhelming victory for the conservative Kuomintang party (KMT) against the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The DPP\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/videos\/world\/2018\/11\/26\/taiwan-president-resigns-party-dpp-elections-jiang-sot-vpx.cnn\">crushing defeat<\/a>\u00a0was worsened by the election result in Kaohsiung, the second largest city in Taiwan and one not expected to vote for the KMT in a majority.
