Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/industry\/transportation\/airlines-\/-aviation\/pm-narendra-modi-lays-foundation-of-greenfield-airport-inaugurates-another-airport-in-arunachal-pradesh\/articleshow\/67913578.cms\">laid<\/a>\u00a0the foundation stone for an important airport in a remote part of the state and announced development plans worth almost $800 million. Those moves provoked an angry response from Beijing. The Chinese government issued a sharp\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/2185541\/china-upset-indias-narendra-modi-lays-foundation-stone-new\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>, saying it was \u2018firmly opposed to the Indian leader\u2019s visit to the eastern section of the Sino-Indian border\u2019. New Delhi\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thewire.in\/diplomacy\/china-firmly-opposes-india-dismisses-pm-modis-visit-to-arunachal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dismissed<\/a>\u00a0the criticism, affirming that the state is \u2018an integral and inalienable part of India\u2019. It\u2019s worth noting that this is nothing new; China\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/defence\/china-protests-pm-modis-visit-to-arunachal-pradesh\/articleshow\/62930311.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">routinely protests<\/a>\u00a0visits by Indian leaders to Arunachal Pradesh, as it did with Modi\u2019s visit last year.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/lead\/making-sense-of-the-wuhan-reset\/article23944124.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018reset\u2019<\/a>\u00a0in the Sino-Indian relationship said to be in place since the 2018\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/up-front\/2018\/05\/23\/wuhan-summit-an-important-signal-of-intent-by-india-and-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wuhan summit<\/a>\u00a0between Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, and the fact that India is careful to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/not-time-yet-for-australias-inclusion-in-malabar-naval-games\/article26058080.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">avoid<\/a>\u00a0trampling\u00a0 Chinese sensitivities elsewhere, such as on its position on the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, New Delhi isn\u2019t refraining from behaving assertively where its core interests are concerned.
