It scrambles fighters daily to intercept multiple aircraft penetrating Japan\u2019s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) \u2013 the block of airspace established over, and usually somewhat beyond, a nation\u2019s territory in which any unknown approaching aircraft is sought to be identified. If determined hostile, the aircraft are then turned away or\u00a0<em>in extremis<\/em>\u00a0engaged.<\/p>\n<p>The number of JASDF scrambles to identify unknown ADIZ-penetrating aircraft have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/asianmilitaryreview.com\/2017\/10\/will-the-sun-set-on-air-superiority-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">steadily risen<\/a>\u00a0from about 300 annually in 2012 to a peak of almost 1200 in 2016. In 2017, the number of scrambles declined to around 900: 55% against Chinese intruders and 43% Russian. A broadly similar ratio held up to end of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mod.go.jp\/js\/Press\/press2019\/press_pdf\/p20190123_02.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">third quarter of 2018<\/a>\u00a0when there were 758 scrambles, an average of almost three a day. Most Chinese aircraft intercepted are fighters; for Russia, intelligence collector aircraft are the most frequently encountered.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-inner__quote--right\">\n<blockquote><p>Japan considers China is engaging\u00a0in a salami-slicing\u00a0strategy of\u00a0incremental power\u00a0projection to gain\u00a0de facto control\u00a0of the Senkaku\u00a0Islands, just as\u00a0Beijing successfully\u00a0did in the South\u00a0China Sea.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>The JASDF\u2019s fleet of some 215 F-15J aircraft bears the brunt of scramble tasking.
