{"id":5707,"date":"2019-04-12T12:00:33","date_gmt":"2019-04-12T02:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/?p=5707"},"modified":"2024-04-20T07:41:26","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T21:41:26","slug":"modi-and-the-watchmen-indias-national-security-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/modi-and-the-watchmen-indias-national-security-election\/","title":{"rendered":"Modi and the watchmen: India\u2019s national security election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/tag\/ian-hall\/\">IAN HALL<\/a> |<\/p>\n<p>Barely a couple of months ago, it looked as though Narendra Modi\u2019s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies were going to struggle to hold on to their majority in India\u2019s general election, scheduled for April and May 2019.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3d0439ac-17ea-11e9-9e64-d150b3105d21\">Some predicted<\/a>\u00a0that the BJP might fail to win even 200 seats \u2013 far short of the 272 it needs \u2013 and that Modi might therefore struggle to construct a governing coalition.<\/p>\n<p>But then came the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/ied-blast-in-kashmirs-pulwama-many-crpf-jawans-killed\/article26268289.ece\">suicide bombing at Pulwama in Kashmir on 14 February<\/a>, which killed more than 48 members of India\u2019s paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force. That incident prompted retaliation \u2013 a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-47366718?intlink_from_url=https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/topics\/czl084npwj2t\/india-pakistan-air-strikes&amp;link_location=live-reporting-story\">strike by the Indian Air Force<\/a>\u00a0on alleged terrorist camps inside both Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Pakistan itself \u2013 and risked a wider conflict. And it allowed Modi and his allies to change the character of the election campaign irrevocably and present themselves in a different light.<\/p>\n<p>Please click here to read the full <a
