{"id":5714,"date":"2019-04-15T08:30:38","date_gmt":"2019-04-14T22:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/?p=5714"},"modified":"2019-04-11T11:25:50","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T01:25:50","slug":"india-should-play-the-tibet-card-with-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/india-should-play-the-tibet-card-with-china\/","title":{"rendered":"India should play the Tibet card with China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>China\u2019s decision to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-47565132\">block<\/a>\u00a0Pakistani Masood Azhar\u2019s designation as a terrorist at the UN yet again is likely to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/week-asia\/opinion\/article\/2187762\/can-china-and-india-salvage-their-relationship-reset-weeks-other\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">test the limits<\/a>\u00a0of the tactical\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/warontherocks.com\/2018\/04\/dancing-with-the-dragon-deciphering-indias-china-reset\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018reset\u2019<\/a>\u00a0in Sino-Indian relations in place since the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/Politics\/KGN8AGFVBshENYC4IjcayH\/ModiXi-Wuhan-summit-India-China-look-to-reset-ties-with-n.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wuhan summit<\/a>\u00a0between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April last year. Another recent, if low-key, development has the potential to set the tone for the future of the relationship between the two countries. The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Tibetan community, has thrown a spanner in the works by saying that his next reincarnation, who will be the 15th Dalai Lama, could\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/india-news\/with-message-for-china-dalai-lama-says-his-successor-may-come-from-india-2009465?pfrom=home-topstories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018come from India\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, the Chinese government has rejected this statement and insists that the Dalai Lama\u2019s reincarnation\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.cgtn.com\/news\/3d3d674e7959444e33457a6333566d54\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018must follow Chinese law\u2019<\/a>. India has provided sanctuary to thousands of Tibetan refugees including the current Dalai Lama since 1959, something that\u2019s a major thorn in Sino-Indian relations, even though India\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mea.gov.in\/rajya-sabha.htm?dtl\/10258\/q+495++indias+stand+on+tibet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">maintains<\/a>\u00a0that it doesn\u2019t challenge Beijing\u2019s sovereignty over Tibet.<\/p>\n<p>The Panchen Lama is an important Tibetan spiritual figure whose duties include anointing the Dalai Lama. In 1995, China\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-china-32771242\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kidnapped<\/a>\u00a0and imprisoned the 11th Panchen Lama (when he was six years old) days after he was appointed by the current Dalai Lama and his whereabouts are unknown.
