The theme, as chosen by their host and current chair Tuvaluan Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga, was \u2018Securing our Future in the Pacific\u2019. The leaders\u2019 meeting of 2018 provides context for what transpired in 2019 and why it is significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eastasiaforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/2013-06-13T120000Z_2091316650_LM2E96A14D101_RTRMADP_3_KIRIBATI-CLIMATE-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"An abandoned house that is affected by seawater during high-tides stands next to a small lagoon near the village of Tangintebu, South Tarawa, Kiribati, 25 May 2013 (Photo: Reuters\/David Gray).\" class=\"wp-image-202247\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Image: REUTERS\/David Gray <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the 2018 meeting in Nauru, all members of the Pacific Islands Forum&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.devpolicy.org\/2018-pacific-islands-leaders-forum-20180912\/\" target=\"_blank\">signed the Boe Declaration on Regional Security<\/a>. The Boe Declaration came from extensive consultations throughout the region. Climate change was elevated to the status of the \u2018single greatest threat\u2019 facing the region at the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lowyinstitute.org\/the-interpreter\/new-faces-and-absent-friends-pacific-diplomacy\" target=\"_blank\">Forum Foreign Ministers<\/a>&nbsp;Meeting.
