It appears that this practice is also\u00a0being followed by Aung San Suu Kyi\u2019s quasi-democratic government, which took\u00a0office in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was suggested recently by the issue of a new set of stamps by Myanmar&nbsp;Post, an agency of the reorganised Ministry of Transport and Communications.&nbsp;In two mini-sheets of eight stamps each, and on the associated first day&nbsp;covers, there are depictions of the country\u2019s eight recognised \u201cnational&nbsp;races\u201d, namely the Bamar (Burman), Kachin, Kayah (Karenni), Karen (Kayin),&nbsp;Chin, Mon, Rakhine (Arakanese), and Shan communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Myanmar is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world, and&nbsp;the use of such labels to categorise the population has long attracted&nbsp;controversy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please click here to read the full <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowyinstitute.org\/the-interpreter\/myanmar-postage-stamps-political%20signals\">&#8220;Myanmar: Postage stamps and political signals&#8221;<\/a> article published at The Interpreter, written by Griffith Asia Institute Adjunct Professor Andrew Selth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new set of stamps by Myanmar&nbsp;Post again draws controversy over \u201cnational&nbsp;races\u201d labels to categorise the population.
