What has been done \u2013 and what has worked \u2013 may well bear on Australia\u2019s \u201cstep up\u201d in the Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Improving these ties has taken time, a great deal of diplomacy from India\u2019s leaders, and significant financial investment. Each of these four states has had past differences with India. At one point or another, New Delhi has intervened \u2013 or simply meddled \u2013 in their internal affairs. During the 1980s, India\u2019s military or intelligence service helped see off coup attempts (or feared attempts) in Mauritius (1983), the Maldives (1988), and Seychelles (1986).
