Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace Prize winner once\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/religion\/the-fallen-idol-aung-san-suu-kyi-and-the-politics-of-personality\/10095394\" target=\"_blank\">hailed<\/a>\u00a0as \u201cthe bravest and most moral person in the world &#8230; the immaculate heroine who allows us all to feel a little better about human nature\u201d,\u00a0sat in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague and defended her country against charges of genocide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The brutal \u201cclearance operations\u201d by Myanmar\u2019s security forces against the Muslim Rohingya population in Rakhine State between October 2016 and the end of 2017 have been extensively documented by governments and international organisations. In 2018, for example, an independent UN fact-finding mission released a 444-page report that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/HRBodies\/HRC\/Pages\/NewsDetail.aspx?NewsID=23575&amp;LangID=Ehttps:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/HRBodies\/HRC\/Pages\/NewsDetail.aspx?NewsID=23575&amp;LangID=E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">described<\/a>&nbsp;in horrific detail case after case of murder, torture, sexual assault and the destruction of property by the armed forces (known as the Tatmadaw) and the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UN Human Rights Council stated that these operations demonstrated \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/Documents\/HRBodies\/HRCouncil\/FFM-Myanmar\/A_HRC_39_64.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">genocidal intent<\/a>\u201d.
