{"id":7051,"date":"2020-03-24T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/?p=7051"},"modified":"2023-08-07T11:20:25","modified_gmt":"2023-08-07T01:20:25","slug":"why-gender-matters-in-the-impact-recovery-from-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/why-gender-matters-in-the-impact-recovery-from-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Why gender matters in the impact recovery from Covid-19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/tag\/sara-davies\/\">SARA E DAVIES<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0|  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strengths and weaknesses in our collective global and national capabilities have been revealed through the Covid-19 outbreak demonstrating our ability to respond to this health emergency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Everything in our social world is&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(20)30526-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\">gendered<\/a>, and so it is with Covid-19. As with the experience of wars and the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, women are often those least visible in crisis decision-making, yet within health emergencies they are conspicuous as healthcare workers and carers. This&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/sites\/reliefweb.int\/files\/resources\/Gender%20implications%20of%20COVID-19%20outbreaks%20in%20development%20and%20humanitarian%20settings.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">gendered reality<\/a>&nbsp;is a remarkable pattern replicated across diverse societies and countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Front-line health professionals and workers most exposed to the infectious disease are likely to be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/12\/us\/women-coronavirus-greater-risk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">women<\/a>: nurses, nurse aides, teachers, child care workers, aged-care workers, and cleaners are mostly women. And&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/311314\/WHO-HIS-HWF-Gender-WP1-2019.1-eng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">67% of the global health workforce<\/a>&nbsp;is female, according to a 2019 study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among those workers \u2013 many part-time and casual, and most likely to be laid off or given shorter hours during the crisis and post-crisis \u2013 women are the largest group. Compared with men, women are more likely to be casual workers without sick leave\/isolation leave work entitlements.&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/amp\/world-asia-51705199?__twitter_impression=true\" target=\"_blank\">Migrant<\/a>&nbsp;women workers \u2013 nurses and domestic workers \u2013 experience double discrimination through both low-paid and\/or casual work, with greater risk of wage loss and unemployment, limited access to healthcare and protective items. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
