This has been made even more evident recently with the escalation in racial abuse towards Australians of Asian heritage due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor David Walker, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deakin.edu.au\/\">Deakin University<\/a> and Professor Jing Han, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernsydney.edu.au\/\">Western Sydney University<\/a> look at how our past still fuels anxiety and racism today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor David Walker draws on his latest book&nbsp;<em><a href=\"void(0)\">Stranded Nation: White Australia in an Asian Region<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;which looks at Australia from 1920 \u2013 1970 and addresses how Australia sought to convince both itself and its neighbours that it belonged within the Asian region. While Professor Jing Han shares her thoughts on modern Australia\u2019s anxiety and how her translation work on the unexpected hit \u2018If You Are the One\u2019 has led to an unprecedented cultural impact and influence on Australian audiences in understanding the ordinary lives of Chinese people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" src=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/davidwalker.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7398\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Professor David Walker AM<\/em>&nbsp;is a historian and emeritus professor at Deakin University. He is a leading authority in the study of Australian perceptions of Asia and has written extensively on Australian social and cultural history and is the author of&nbsp;<em>Anxious Nation: Australia and the Rise of Asia, 1850 \u2013 1939<\/em>. He is an Honorary Professorial Fellow in the Asia Institute, University of Melbourne, was the inaugural BHP Billiton Professor in Australian Studies at Peking University and appointed a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/jing-han-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7400\" width=\"192\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/jing-han-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/jing-han-1-236x300.jpg 236w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>Professor Jing Han<\/em>&nbsp;is Director, Australia-China Institute For Arts and Culture, Western Sydney University and was the Head of SBS Subtitling Department. She is a leading expert in subtitling, intercultural communications and translating Chinese culture.
