All were men. On February 29, Vice President Mike Pence, the head of the task force, posted a\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mike_Pence\/status\/1233881402527055875?s=20\" target=\"_blank\">now infamous photo<\/a>\u00a0to his Twitter account of a \u201cvery productive meeting,\u201d with more than a dozen men and no women sitting around a table in the White House\u2019s Situation Room. By early March,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2020\/03\/20\/guide-to-trump-administration-coronavirus-response-team\/\" target=\"_blank\">two women had been appointed to the team<\/a>: Deborah Birx, who took the high-profile role of response coordinator, and Seema Verma, the administrator for Medicare and Medicaid. But throughout January and most of February, the most crucial early period of the US response to COVID-19, only men were part of the Trump administration\u2019s decision-making team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reluctance to include even a minority of women in high-level roles is an all-too common pattern, from&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/259435055_Counting_Women_and_Balancing_Gender_Increasing_Women%27s_Participation_in_Governance\" target=\"_blank\">corporate board rooms<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lowyinstitute.org\/the-interpreter\/towards-equal-peace-australian-regional-investment-gender-equality\" target=\"_blank\">peace negotiations<\/a>. In the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(20)30110-0\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\">health care sector<\/a>\u2014as in politics, business and the military\u2014men dominate leadership positions.
