The lockdown, after multiple extensions, lasted for several weeks. Yet, today, India is ranked as the third most affected country in the world (as depicted by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.jhu.edu\/map.html\">Johns Hopkins University<\/a>) in terms of total confirmed cases (although, when adjusted for population size, it has a better ranking). In terms of number of deaths too, it does not fare well relative to many of its peers. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happened? How did the great Indian lockdown fail to produce the expected outcomes? It appears that, instead of \u2018flattening\u2019 the pandemic curve, the lockdown strategy merely delayed it for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Table 1 Confirmed Cases by Country\/Region\/Sovereignty \u2013 the top ten<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3,711,359 US<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2,074,860 Brazil<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1,038,716 India<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>764,215 Russia<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>350,879 South Africa<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>349,500 Peru<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>338,913 Mexico<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>328,846 Chile<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>295,632 United Kingdom<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>271,606 Iran<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/opinion\/columns\/coronavirus-lockdown-india-covid-19-cases-deaths-6494930\/\">Kaushik Basu<\/a>&nbsp;, noted Indian economist (former Chief Economic Adviser to the Indian government and former Chief Economist of the World Bank) says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The lockdown, announced on March 24, far from controlling the spread of the pandemic, seems to have made it worse. Two weeks after the start of the lockdown, the infection rate picked up and it has been on an alarming upward climb since then (See Figure below)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.indianexpress.com\/2020\/07\/oped-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There is apparently more bad news on the pandemic front.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/explainspeaking-why-the-indian-economy-is-struggling-to-recover-growth-6502799\/\">Media reports<\/a>&nbsp;in India highlight the following disturbing prospects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A study by researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) that stated that the number of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/about\/coronavirus\/\">Covid-19<\/a>&nbsp;cases recorded per day in India&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/india-daily-covid-coronavirus-cases-mit-study-6495853\/\" target=\"_blank\">may surge to 287,000 by early 2021<\/a>&nbsp;if a vaccine or treatment isn\u2019t developed soon.
