Now they must reignite that spirit and look towards peaceful coexistence among nations<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;\u201cnew cold war\u201d: that\u2019s the buzzword appearing in headlines amid the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/us-china-relations\">deepening strategic enmity between the United States and China<\/a>. Since late June, amid the Covid-19 pandemic\u2019s ongoing rampage in the US,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/united-states\">high-ranking officials in Washington<\/a>&nbsp;have unleashed a series of rhetorical attacks on the Chinese Communist Party. National security adviser Robert O\u2019Brien, FBI director Christopher Wray, attorney general William Barr and secretary of state Mike Pompeo have been dubbed the \u201cfour horsemen of the apocalypse\u201d tasked by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/donald-trump\">US President Donald Trump<\/a>&nbsp;to take down the Communist Party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symbolically, Pompeo\u2019s July 23 talk at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library, calling for a new \u201calliance of democracies\u201d to confront the Communist Party, evokes former British prime minister Winston Churchill\u2019s \u201cIron Curtain\u201d speech of more than 70 years ago and seems to highlight a new cold war with China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his Labour Day remarks, Trump raised the prospect of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/us-china-decoupling\">\u201cdecoupling\u201d the American economy from China<\/a>, and claimed: \u201cWe will make America into the manufacturing superpower of the world and end our reliance on China once and for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To set the decoupling of bilateral relations in motion, Washington has taken concrete actions such as closing the Chinese Consulate-General in Houston, sending its health secretary to Taiwan, attempting to ban Chinese social media apps TikTok and WeChat in the US, and restricting Chinese apparel and tech goods allegedly produced by forced labour in Xinjiang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, the US has launched a new cold war with China \u2013 but whether it succeeds depends on the response from Beijing and other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Please click here to read the full &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/week-asia\/opinion\/article\/3102125\/us-china-ties-worsen-india-and-china-must-revisit-bandung-spirit\">As US-China ties worsen, India and China must revisit the \u2018Bandung spirit\u2019 to avert a new cold war<\/a>&#8221; article published at The Week in Asia, written by <a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\">Griffith Asia Institute<\/a> researcher, Professor Kai He.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While Beijing does not intend to get involved in an ideological battle with Washington, all of Asia risks getting caught up in their strategic competition<br \/>\nChina and India took part in the 1955 Bandung Conference.
