But\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/pacific-islands-forum-on-brink-of-collapse-over-leadership-dispute-20210208-p570iw.html\">rumours of its demise<\/a>\u00a0have been somewhat exaggerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We may also look back at February 2021 as a turning point in Pacific&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/social-sciences\/regionalism\">regionalism <\/a>, or the processes that foster cooperation and solidarity among Pacific island countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With increased attention on the forum and how it works, this could prompt change for the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">What is the Pacific Islands Forum?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pacific Islands Forum has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forumsec.org\/who-we-arepacific-islands-forum\/\">18 members<\/a>, including Australia and New Zealand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded in 1971, it was established by Pacific leaders who were denied a space to talk politics by the colonial powers in what was then the South Pacific Commission (now the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spc.int\/\">Pacific Community<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The forum is where leaders meet as equals to address the biggest issues affecting individual nations and the Pacific as a whole, such as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forumsec.org\/2020\/04\/08\/pacific-islands-forum-foreign-ministers-agree-to-establish-a-pacific-humanitarian-pathway-on-covid-19\/\">response to COVID-19<\/a>&nbsp;and climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, the leaders signed the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forumsec.org\/2018\/09\/05\/boe-declaration-on-regional-security\/\">Boe Declaration<\/a>, which established climate change as the most important threat to the security of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfat.gov.au\/geo\/solomon-islands\/Pages\/solomon-islands-country-brief\">Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands<\/a>&nbsp;was conducted with the backing of the forum. The collective political will of its membership also delivered the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nti.org\/learn\/treaties-and-regimes\/south-pacific-nuclear-free-zone-spnfz-treaty-rarotonga\/\">Treaty of Rarotonga<\/a>, making the Pacific a nuclear-free zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pacific Islands Forum is run by a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forumsec.org\/\">secretariat<\/a>&nbsp;based in Suva, headed up by a secretary-general.
