{"id":8374,"date":"2021-06-07T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-06T22:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/?p=8374"},"modified":"2023-08-08T08:41:13","modified_gmt":"2023-08-07T22:41:13","slug":"bangladesh-at-50-south-asias-standout-star","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/bangladesh-at-50-south-asias-standout-star\/","title":{"rendered":"Bangladesh at 50: South Asia\u2019s \u2018standout star\u2019?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/tag\/yan-islam\">YAN ISLAM<\/a>  |  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early this year, Bangladesh celebrated its 50th year as an independent nation. \u2018The country was born\u2019, writes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2021-05-31\/india-and-pakistan-are-now-poorer-than-bangladesh\">Bloomberg columnist Mihir Sharma<\/a>, \u2018amid famine and war; millions fled to India or were killed by Pakistani soldiers\u2019. At the time of its birth, Bangladesh\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/feast-and-famine\/2012\/11\/02\/out-of-the-basket\">was dismissed as a \u2018basket case\u2019<\/a>, while superstars in the music profession scrambled to raise money to support aid programs to assuage the suffering of a hungry, impoverished nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Bangladesh is classified by the World Bank as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/datahelpdesk.worldbank.org\/knowledgebase\/articles\/906519-world-bank-country-and-lending-groups\">\u2018lower middle income economy\u2019&nbsp;<\/a>with notable progress in a broad range of social indicators. As the&nbsp;<em>Economist<\/em>&nbsp;noted nearly ten years ago, Bangladesh has come&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/feast-and-famine\/2012\/11\/02\/out-of-the-basket\">\u2018out of the basket\u2019.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What struck Sharma is that Bangladesh has quietly overtaken its once-richer South Asian neighbours \u2013 Pakistan and India. As he notes: \u2018In 1971, Pakistan was 70% richer than Bangladesh; today, Bangladesh is 45% richer than Pakistan.\u2019 Sharma reserves the strongest words of rebuke for India:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>India&nbsp;\u2014 eternally confident about being the only South Asian economy that matters \u2014 now must grapple with the fact that it, too, is&nbsp;poorer than Bangladesh&nbsp;\u2026Don\u2019t hold your breath expecting India to acknowledge Bangladesh\u2019s success: Right-wing figures in India are convinced Bangladesh is so destitute that illegal migrants from there are overrunning the border. In reality, Bangladesh is far richer than the depressed Indian states where Hindu nationalist politicians have been railing against&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/elections\/lok-sabha-2019\/story\/bjp-amit-shah-hindu-refugees-mamata-bannerjee-1499691-2019-04-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bangladeshi \u201ctermites.\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;It\u2019s as if Mississippi were fretting about illegal immigration from Canada.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ouch!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bangladesh government has recently announced that the country\u2019s per capita GDP has risen to USD 2,227 thus consolidating its position as a lower-middle-income economy. This has happened despite the adverse shock of the current global pandemic because the country managed to maintain its rapid pace of growth. Indeed, from being a growth laggard relative to its powerful neighbours, Bangladesh has emerged as a growth leader. It did not even suffer a recession during the first wave of COVID-19 in 2020 \u2013 see the figure below culled from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/external\/datamapper\/NGDP_RPCH@WEO\/BGD\/IND\/PAK\">IMF DataMapper.<\/a>\u00a0The projections to 2025 suggest that Bangladesh will grow significantly faster than either India or Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"875\" height=\"571\" src=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/fig1-bangladesh50.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/fig1-bangladesh50.jpg 875w, https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/fig1-bangladesh50-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 875px) 100vw, 875px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 1: Comparative growth rates (%), 1980-2025, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharma attributes Bangladesh\u2019s economic success to \u2018exports, social progress and fiscal prudence\u2019. These \u2018three pillars\u2019 are part of the story, but Sharma could have acknowledged that there is a rich literature trying to comprehend the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.effective-states.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/ESID-Briefing-Paper-27-Bangladesh-Paradox.pdf\">\u2018Bangladesh paradox\u2019.<\/a>&nbsp;How did an impoverished nation, dismissed as a basket case, and saddled with seemingly dysfunctional institutions and a corrupt, highly adversarial political system manage to get \u2018out of the basket\u2019?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharma, however, correctly notes that \u2018Bangaldesh\u2019s success brings its own set of problems\u2019. He rightly opines that \u2018(t)he government needs a strategy for the next decade that focuses on new forms of global integration and on a continued transformation of the economy\u2019.
