{"id":8504,"date":"2021-07-27T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-26T22:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/?p=8504"},"modified":"2023-08-08T19:09:17","modified_gmt":"2023-08-08T09:09:17","slug":"aseans-conception-of-regional-citizenship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/aseans-conception-of-regional-citizenship\/","title":{"rendered":"ASEAN\u2019s conception of regional citizenship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/tag\/luis-cabrera\">LUIS CABRERA<\/a> AND <a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/tag\/caitlin-byrne\/\">CAITLIN BYRNE<\/a>\u00a0 |\u00a0  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ASEAN has for some time been explicit that the development of a common regional identity among citizens of its 10 member states is essential to advancing the regional integration project.&nbsp;Its Charter declares that \u201cASEAN shall promote its common ASEAN identity and a sense of belonging among its peoples in order to achieve its shared destiny, goals, and values.\u201d It has conducted cohesion and educational efforts under the theme \u201cWe Are ASEAN,\u201d and it declared 2020 to be the \u201cYear of ASEAN Identity,\u201d with numerous related initiatives and events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Increasingly, however, ASEAN and its affiliates have framed the identity-building project explicitly as one aimed at creating ASEAN regional&nbsp;citizens. For example, a 2019 report from a \u201cPoll on ASEAN Awareness\u201d commissioned by the ASEAN Secretariat used the phrase \u201cASEAN Citizens\u201d more than two dozen times, including extensively in survey questions themselves. For example, Q23 asks, \u201cHow can ASEAN improve the way it communicates with ASEAN citizens?\u201d In that vein, ASEAN Secretary-General Lim Jock Hoi notes that the organisation launched&nbsp;The ASEAN&nbsp;magazine in 2020 to \u201cshare and communicate ASEAN\u2019s work to its citizens.\u201d The organisation\u2019s ASEAN Champions podcast, focusing on high achievers throughout the region, is billed as being \u201cIn Conversations with ASEAN Citizens,\u201d and ASEAN\u2019s official social media accounts offer information and at times directive advice to \u201cASEAN citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Please click here to read the full \u201c<a
