In March it sent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-56474847\">some 220 fishing vessels<\/a>&nbsp;to anchor in neat rows and crowd out Whitsun Reef, a territory claimed by the Philippines. In June, the People\u2019s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force conducted a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2021\/06\/01\/china-sends-16-military-aircraft-over-disputed-south-china-sea-shoals-near-malaysia\/\">radio-silent formation flight<\/a>&nbsp;of 16 strategic air transport aircraft across the South China Sea to within around 60 nautical miles north of the East Malaysian coast, sparking an intercept by two Royal Malaysian Air Force Hawk aircraft. More worryingly, in June 2020, as part of its salami-slicing grey-zone tactics on the India\u2013China border, the PLA&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-53061476\">killed some 20 Indian soldiers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/airpower.airforce.gov.au\/publications\/chinas-enduring-grey-zone-challenge\">a new publication<\/a>&nbsp;from Canberra\u2019s Air and Space Power Centre, I examine Chinese grey-zone activities and possible responses in some detail.
