The enigmatic, reserved herbivores evoke goodwill wherever they travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With numbers of wild giant pandas perilously low, though no longer endangered, the rare arrival of a giant panda cub, especially in captivity, is a much-celebrated event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week\u2019s announcement of <a href=\"https:\/\/cnalifestyle.channelnewsasia.com\/entertainment\/giant-panda-cub-singapore-kai-kai-jia-jia-275491\">a cub born<\/a> to giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia\u2014currently on loan from China to Singapore\u2014is no exception, attracting the delight of many, including Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the first panda cub&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/singapore\/kai-kai-jia-jia-singapore-panda-cub-birth-wildlife-reserves-2123226\">born in the Southeast Asian country<\/a>, this new arrival serves as a timely reminder of China\u2019s soft power reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gifts with a unique significance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China\u2019s panda diplomacy is nothing new. Gift-giving is quite normal in diplomatic practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Animals, particularly where they hold a unique national significance, have long been associated with the most famous diplomatic gifts over time. And in the context of winning hearts and minds, \u201ccuteness\u201d also matters.
