Thomas Shugart\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowyinstitute.org\/publications\/australia-and-growing-reach-china-s-military\">new Lowy Institute paper<\/a>&nbsp;explores this and then imagines the potential dangers arising for Australia. Shugart\u2019s US-centric perspective is nicely complemented by Hugh White\u2019s and James Goldrick\u2019s debate in The Interpreter, giving Australian viewpoints respectively on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowyinstitute.org\/the-interpreter\/seaborne-trade-essential-undefendable\">seaborne trade<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowyinstitute.org\/the-interpreter\/australia-s-essential-need-not-seaborne-trade-seaborne-supply\">seaborne essential item supply<\/a>, both of which rely on merchant shipping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shugart looks to the medium term (5-8 years) and long term (8-20 years). The near term is effectively today with its worries over Taiwan and the South and East China Seas. If China were to take military action in the region soon, Shugart considers Australia would contribute expeditionary forces, but our remoteness means the continent would be little impacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is reminiscent of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nsc.crawford.anu.edu.au\/publication\/17266\/national-mobilisation-during-war-past-insights-future-possibilities\" target=\"_blank\">Australia\u2019s experience<\/a>&nbsp;in the First World War and the Second World War\u2019s first phase (1939-1941) when the country was so distant to major battlefields, it was irrelevant to both allies and adversaries. Australia went unthreatened, but it also meant that getting merchant ships to come to Australia was very difficult.
