{"id":8682,"date":"2021-10-19T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-18T22:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/?p=8682"},"modified":"2023-08-06T21:00:27","modified_gmt":"2023-08-06T11:00:27","slug":"could-defections-threaten-the-survival-of-myanmars-military-regime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/could-defections-threaten-the-survival-of-myanmars-military-regime\/","title":{"rendered":"Could defections threaten the survival of Myanmar\u2019s military regime?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/tag\/andrew-selth\/\">ANDREW SELTH<\/a>\u00a0 |\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Myanmar\u2019s generals seized power on 1 February, sparking an immediate and massive public reaction, it soon became clear the coup would severely&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowyinstitute.org\/the-interpreter\/myanmar-coup-will-test-loyalty-security-forces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>test the cohesion and loyalty<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;of the country\u2019s security forces. This was a critical issue as, lacking any popular mandate, the junta depended entirely on coercion and intimidation to enforce its will over the civilian population. Nine months later, it is worth looking at this subject again, for three reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One reason is the continued opposition to the military regime, including from a wide variety of armed groups. Another is the increasing trickle of defections from the armed forces (or Tatmadaw) and Myanmar Police Force (MPF) to the resistance movement. The third reason is a recent report that a senior army officer in a critical command position was arrested for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irrawaddy.com\/news\/burma\/myanmar-military-detains-north-western-commander-for-planning-to-defect-ethnic-insurgent-sources.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>planning to defect<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;to one of the country\u2019s ethnic armed organisations (EAO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As always, developments in Myanmar are difficult to determine with any confidence.
