This in turn was enacted to bring about peace and stability further to \u201cLes \u00c9venements\u201d \u2013 a period of instability and violence that stemmed from friction and conflict between the French state and the Kanaky people seeking self-determination and sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/GdAEeLFR2eY\">first referendum<\/a>&nbsp;was held. The vote was in favour of remaining a part of France by a margin of 57% to 43%. Last year the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/vfA4DVOObFs\">second referendum<\/a>&nbsp;saw the margin narrow with 53% voting \u201cNon\u201d to independence and 47% voting \u201cOui\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Noumea Accord allows for the third vote to be held at any time up to October 2022.
