These seem designed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/commentary\/china-make-friends-win-global-opinion-xi-jinping-ccp-1828876\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not to make friends<\/a>&nbsp;but rather to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/blogs\/ukrainealert\/putins-imperialism-turns-neighbors-into-enemies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">antagonise others<\/a>. Moreover, Chinese and Russian actions don\u2019t seem to be advancing their interests. Instead, they are only convincing many countries to pushback, including through diversifying trade away from China and Russia, reshaping national defence forces and posture, highlighting Chinese and Russian internal failings and opposing the two nations in diplomatic forums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Chinese and Russian strategies can usefully be looked at differently, to both highlight their logic and the implications that then arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China endlessly&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eastasiaforum.org\/2021\/12\/10\/xi-demands-respect-at-the-us-china-virtual-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\">seeks respect<\/a>, a somewhat vague term partly&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/smallwarsjournal.com\/jrnl\/art\/countering-chinas-gray-zone-strategy\" target=\"_blank\">related to&nbsp;<em>shi<\/em>,<\/a>&nbsp;sometimes translated as strategic advantage.
