{"id":9034,"date":"2022-03-29T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-28T22:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/?p=9034"},"modified":"2023-08-06T20:00:17","modified_gmt":"2023-08-06T10:00:17","slug":"can-states-have-strategic-personalities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/can-states-have-strategic-personalities\/","title":{"rendered":"Can states have strategic personalities?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/tag\/ian-hall\/\">IAN HALL<\/a> AND REN\u00c9E JEFFERY    |  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In&nbsp;<em>The Interpreter<\/em>&nbsp;last month, Bec Strating and Joanne Wallis&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowyinstitute.org\/the-interpreter\/joining-barty-party-foreign-and-defence-policy\">weighed into the debate<\/a>&nbsp;about Australia\u2019s \u201cstrategic personality\u201d&nbsp;and how it should change to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eastasiaforum.org\/2019\/05\/17\/focussing-on-foreign-policy-for-the-sake-of-australias-future\/\" target=\"_blank\">respond more effectively<\/a>&nbsp;to the security challenges the country now faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Canberra\u2019s policymakers wanted a personality to emulate, Strating and Wallis argued, they might look to the just retired tennis star, Ashleigh Barty. Prodigiously talented, versatile, and appreciative that individual success on the court depends on the hard work of a big team on the sidelines, Barty is an excellent role model. And as a Ngaragu woman, she also reminds Australians of the need \u201cmeaningfully\u201d to engage with First Nations at home and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is much to be said for this argument. But we want to pick up on something else in Strating and Wallis\u2019 piece: their scepticism about the concept of \u201cstrategic personality\u201d and its usefulness. As it so happens, we have been conducting a review of what others in the region think about Australia\u2019s strategic personality.
