On Sunday, Australian&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canberratimes.com.au\/story\/7767238\/raaf-aircraft-intercepted-in-china-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Defence Minister Richard Marles revealed<\/a>&nbsp;a \u201cvery dangerous\u201d intercept by a People\u2019s Liberation Army Air Force\u2019s (PLAAF) fighter of an Australian P-8 maritime patrol aircraft took place on 26 May over the South China Sea. The P-8 aircraft was flying in international airspace at the time, well outside territorial waters. Australia has conducted maritime patrols in the area&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aeroaustraliamag.com\/first-p-8-operation-gateway-deployment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for several decades<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 the P-8s flight was unremarkable, the J-16 fighter\u2019s aggressive moves anything but.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2020&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.defence.gov.au\/about\/publications\/2020-defence-strategic-update\" target=\"_blank\">Defence Strategic Update<\/a>&nbsp;earlier fretted about China\u2019s grey zone activities.
