China\u2019s Ministry of National Defence spokesman Senior Colonel Tan Kefei&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/technology\/innovation\/military\/chinas-ominous-threeword-warning-to-australia\/news-story\/cd714b6dc62c05a3cca24f2c1cc83e86\" target=\"_blank\">recently declared<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cit is completely unreasonable to send military planes to the door of others [and] those who come uninvited shall bear the consequences\u201d.&nbsp; Notably, this threat was not about flying through \u201cthe door\u201d but near to it. China claims a huge sweep of the South China Sea under its so-called nine-dash line, and while&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowyinstitute.org\/the-interpreter\/whatever-happened-south-china-sea-ruling\">found legally unsound<\/a>&nbsp;by the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague, China&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.benarnews.org\/english\/news\/malaysian\/malaysia-sees-shift-in-chinas-justification-of-south-china-sea-claims-01182022141916.html\" target=\"_blank\">remains fixated<\/a>&nbsp;on trying to make its claim real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China\u2019s Australian aircraft intercept followed similar actions against Canadian maritime surveillance aircraft and last year\u2019s Chinese large military air transport aircraft formation&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/airuniversity.af.edu\/Portals\/10\/CASI\/documents\/Research\/CASI%20Articles\/2022-05-06%20PLAAF%20Flight%20Near%20Malaysia.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">flight across the South China Sea<\/a>&nbsp;to about 120 kilometres from East Malaysia. While within international law, the lack of prior advice to Malaysia that their Exclusive Economic Zone would be overflown by numerous military aircraft, and all without contacting regional air traffic control centres, raised flight safety concerns.
