AI is now beginning to interest the world\u2019s defence forces, but the military comes late to the game. Given this, defence forces globally are fundamentally uncertain about AI\u2019s&nbsp;place in warfighting. Accordingly, there\u2019s considerable experimentation in defence AI underway worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This process is being explored in a new series sponsored by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/defenseai.eu\/english\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Defense AI Observatory<\/a>&nbsp;at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsu-hh.de\/en\/university\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Helmut Schmidt University\/University of the Federal Armed Forces<\/a>&nbsp;in Germany. Unlike other defence AI studies, the series is not focusing solely on technology but instead is looking more broadly across what the Australian Defence Force terms the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dica.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Capability-Life-Cycle-Manual-v2-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fundamental inputs to capability\u2019<\/a>. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/defenseai.eu\/daio_study2202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first study examines<\/a>&nbsp;Australian defence AI, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Defense_AIO\/status\/1539886453882294272?cxt=HHwWgMC44cak494qAAAA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another 17 country studies<\/a>&nbsp;have already been commissioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ADF conceives of AI as mainly being used in human\u2013machine teams to improve efficiency, increase combat power and achieve decision superiority, while lowering the risk to personnel.
