This&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6218211\/vladimir-putin-russian-tsars-imperialism\/\">passive support<\/a>&nbsp;for Vladimir Putin\u2019s imperialism is at odds with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/defence\/checking-china-what-is-the-quad-alliance\/articleshow\/91757226.cms?from=mdr\">India\u2019s membership of the Quad<\/a>\u2014the other three Quad nations voted to condemn Russian aggression. India\u2019s vote underlines that on defence and security matters beyond&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspistrategist.org.au\/will-the-quad-deliver-on-its-promises\/\">the Quad<\/a>, its cooperation with the United States, Japan and Australia is problematic. India\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastasiaforum.org\/2022\/08\/08\/matching-political-will-to-geopolitical-ambition-in-india\/\">geostrategic aspirations<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>modus operandi<\/em>&nbsp;are not like others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eastasiaforum.org\/2022\/08\/07\/how-india-can-realise-its-ambitions-to-become-a-great-power\/\" target=\"_blank\">aims<\/a>&nbsp;to become&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carnegieendowment.org\/2016\/04\/04\/india-as-leading-power-pub-63185\">a leading power<\/a>&nbsp;able to shape international order. Achieving this ambition involves placing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mea.gov.in\/Speeches-Statements.htm?dtl\/34287\/Foreign_Secretarys_Remarks_on_Indias_Foreign_Policy_and_Its_Strategic_Imperative_The_Way_Forward_at_the_6th_JP_Morgan_India_Investor_Summit_September_\"><em>atma-nirbhar<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(strategic autonomy) as the first pillar of Indian diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strategic autonomy is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/idsa.in\/askanexpert\/strategicautonomy_indiasecurity\">the ability of a state<\/a>&nbsp;to pursue its national interests and adopt its preferred foreign policy without being unduly constrained by other states. Such autonomy is most easily achievable in a multipolar international system where several great powers can be played off against each other.
