{"id":9485,"date":"2022-11-10T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-09T22:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/?p=9485"},"modified":"2023-08-06T19:59:46","modified_gmt":"2023-08-06T09:59:46","slug":"why-india-wont-break-with-russia-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/why-india-wont-break-with-russia-yet\/","title":{"rendered":"Why India won&#8217;t break with Russia&#8230; yet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/asiainsights\/tag\/ian-hall\/\">IAN HALL<\/a>  |   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent weeks, India has been more vocal about the Ukraine conflict than at the start of the war, beginning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s remark, made in a mid-September 2022 meeting with Vladimir Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, that this was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/17\/world\/modi-putin-russia-ukraine-war-rebuke-intl-hnk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not a time for war<\/a>\u201d. Since then, India\u2019s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has spoken out repeatedly about the broader price being paid for Russia\u2019s invasion, including the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/india\/s-jaishankar-on-russia-ukraine-india-on-side-of-those-who-11664065597046.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">escalating costs of food, fuel and fertilisers<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, India\u2019s position on the war has so far not changed in any substantive way. On 1 October, India <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/india-abstains-on-unsc-resolution-over-russia-s-annexation-of-4-ukraine-regions-101664603448896.html\" target=\"_blank\">abstained on a Security Council Resolution<\/a> condemning Russia\u2019s attempt to annex Ukraine\u2019s four breakaway regions following a sham referendum. A few days later, it abstained again on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/thewire.in\/diplomacy\/india-abstains-unga-resolution-russia-condemn\" target=\"_blank\">another Resolution on the forced annexations<\/a>, this time in the UN General Assembly (UNGA).
