But are there lessons from the operation that should be considered in the context of the Russo-Ukrainian War? Dr Peter Layton thinks so\u2014and they\u2019re not just tactical implications, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"viewer-b940n\">Fifty years ago the American government was trying to end the country\u2019s military involvement in Vietnam. It came not with a whimper but with a bang in the short, sharp <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airandspaceforces.com\/article\/1197linebacker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Linebacker II air campaign<\/a> (18-29 December 1972). This air campaign\u2019s partially successful role in that particular war\u2019s termination may offer some insights for today\u2019s Ukraine war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"viewer-8a4i3\">America entered the war between South and North Vietnam in earnest in mid-1965, quickly stabilising but not winning the conflict. Frustrated, the North ordered a major uprising that became the 1968 Tet Offensive which saw <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/history.state.gov\/milestones\/1961-1968\/tet\" target=\"_blank\">the destruction<\/a> of the Viet Cong guerrilla warfare forces in South Vietnam. After that, only the North Vietnamese army could win the war for Hanoi and so was accordingly developed. In the 1972 Easter Offensive, the North launched a major land assault that was <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airandspaceforces.com\/article\/0998easter\/\" target=\"_blank\">comprehensively defeated<\/a> by the South Vietnamese Army and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airuniversity.af.edu\/Portals\/10\/AUPress\/Books\/B_0089_MOMYER_AIRPOWER.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">American air power<\/a>. This second failure still did not convince the North to agree to a peace settlement at the talks <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/defenceindepth.co\/2017\/05\/19\/stuck-in-endless-preliminaries-vietnam-and-the-battle-of-the-paris-peace-table-november-1968-january-1969\/\" target=\"_blank\">underway since late 1968<\/a>.
