He accused the Coalition of being immature and pursuing a divisive ethno-nationalist agenda. However, some of his comments, which were an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fijitimes.com\/voreqe-in-hot-soup\/\">attack on the President<\/a>, appeared to go too far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Rabuka government has reiterated its intention to reinstate funding to the University of the South Pacific and the PM has said he plans to meet with Vice-Chancellor Pal who returned to the country at the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Steps to improve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/international\/pacific-news\/484152\/fiji-govt-minister-apologises-to-media-for-abuse-and-harassment\">media freedom<\/a> in Fiji are also high on the new government\u2019s agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vanuatu makes important foreign policy moves<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Foreign Minister Jotham Napat has announced that his Ministry will develop a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypost.vu\/news\/new-foreign-policy-in-100-day-work-plan-napat\/article_85cc6bf4-8744-5108-8c7c-db18c9ad5887.html?utm_source=dailypost.vu&amp;utm_campaign=%2Fnewsletter%2Foptimize%2Fdaily-headlines%2F%3F-dc%3D1675458028&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=headline\">foreign policy<\/a> to be released within 100 days. Napat wants this policy to be one that positions Vanuatu as an equal partner rather than \u2018subservient\u2019 and said that the policy needs to provide for his country to engage proactively with relevant geopolitical trends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As chair of the Melanesian Spearhead Group, Vanuatu is keen to see the issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypost.vu\/news\/minister-wants-yes-or-no-answer-to-ulmwp-application\/article_077fcf02-023b-5b78-809f-a449755b5060.html?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=user-share\">membership for the United Liberation Movement for West Papua<\/a> (ULMWP) resolved. This has been a thorn in the side of the grouping for several years. The ULMWP has a secretariat in Port Vila and its representatives have been lobbying the Kalsakau government to progress this issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Foreign Minister Napat has suggested that he will visit Solomon Islands, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea to secure high-level agreement prior to a Leaders\u2019 meeting to be convened in Port Vila later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Pacific News:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of ongoing talks relating to the renewal of Compact funding arrangements, the <strong>Federated States of Micronesia <\/strong>has secured a <a href=\"https:\/\/islandsbusiness.com\/news-break\/fsm-compact\/\">major funding commitment from the USA<\/a>. The agreement will see FSM receive US$7 billion over a twenty-year period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Samoa <\/strong>has taken on the chairing of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.einnews.com\/pr_news\/616234711\/a-new-era-of-island-leadership-samoa-is-aosis-chair\">Alliance of Small Island States<\/a>. This powerful bloc represents 39 island countries across the globe with a strong focus on issues of sustainability and addressing the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>Solomon Islands<\/strong>, the premier of Malaita, the most populous province, has been unseated in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sibconline.com.sb\/malaita-provincial-assembly-passes-motion-of-no-confidence-against-suidani\/\">motion of no confidence<\/a>. Whilst much commentary presented this as the result of Chinese interference, the reality is located much more in the realm of domestic politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forumsec.org\/2023\/02\/10\/release-pacific-islands-forum-mission-completes-visit-to-japan\/\"><strong>Pacific Islands Forum <\/strong>delegation<\/a>, led by incoming PIF chair, Prime Minister Mark Brown of Cook Islands, has visited Japan. The parties agreed to maintain \u2018intensive dialogue\u2019 about the contentious issue of the discharge of treated wastewater from Fukushima into the Pacific ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A New Zealand pilot has been kidnapped in <strong>West Papua. <\/strong>The West Papua Liberation Army (WLPA) has confirmed that they are holding Phillip Mertens and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/international\/pacific-news\/484193\/rebel-group-in-papua-says-kidnapped-nz-pilot-safe\">that he is safe<\/a>.
