After a false start in 2009, and a prime ministerial foray in 2014 into&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspistrategist.org.au\/the-strange-submarine-saga-how-did-we-get-there\/\"><strong>buying Japanese submarines<\/strong><\/a>, a contract was awarded in 2016 for eight very large French-designed conventional submarines to be built in Australia. However, in 2021, the contract was terminated, and instead a remarkable trilateral plan was announced for Australia to acquire nuclear attack submarines (SSN)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/09\/15\/joint-leaders-statement-on-aukus\/\"><strong>under the new<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;Australia\u2013UK\u2013US (AUKUS) partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2022, a new Labor government was elected that vowed to continue this SSN shift.
