A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/asiapacific4d.com\/idea\/combatting-iuufishing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>&nbsp;by the Asia-Pacific Development, Diplomacy &amp; Defence Dialogue (AP4D) considers this problem and how Australia can combat IUU fishing with a range of defence, development and diplomacy tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defence.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-08\/2016-Defence-White-Paper.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acknowledged<\/a>&nbsp;in the 2016 defence white paper, IUU fishing can pose a direct security threat to Australia\u2019s maritime resources and borders. Australia has the world\u2019s third largest exclusive economic zone, stretching across the Pacific, Southern and Indian Oceans. IUU fishing threatens the harvest of fish stocks both within and beyond the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.gov.au\/agriculture-land\/fisheries\/domestic\/zone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Australian Fishing Zone<\/a>, impacting fishing communities in Australia and in neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This issue will only worsen as the climate changes. Climate change is already affecting the abundance and distribution of fisheries with more&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/rusi.org\/explore-our-research\/publications\/occasional-papers\/future-iuu-fishing-trends-warming-world-global-horizon-scan\" target=\"_blank\">significant declines<\/a>&nbsp;predicted, especially in the equatorial zone.
