Much of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/stratnewsglobal.com\/articles\/the-pros-and-cons-of-a-virtual-sco-summit\/\" class=\"\">commentary<\/a>&nbsp;about the meeting concentrated\u2014not unreasonably\u2014on the fact that it was held online and not in person. No official explanation was given for the decision to convene a virtual summit. But an Indian government source did suggest, in a briefing to a prominent journalist, that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/india-to-host-sco-summit-virtually-on-july-4-chaired-by-pm-modi-theme-towards-a-secure-sco-with-10-pillars-of-cooperation-101685458616444.html\" class=\"\">scheduling was not the reason<\/a>&nbsp;why the meeting was shifted online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not hard to work out, of course, why a virtual summit was preferred and even welcomed by some of the participants. The diplomatic calendar is&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lowyinstitute.org\/the-interpreter\/biden-s-trip-cancellations-reveal-pitfalls-crowded-diplomatic-calendar\">increasingly crowded<\/a>. An in-person meeting would have entailed two complex trips to India for Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin in the space of three months, with the Group of Twenty summit pending in September. The Russian leader would likely have been relieved not to travel for other reasons too, given&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2023\/06\/24\/putin-wagner-prigozhin-mercenaries\/\">recent events at home<\/a>&nbsp;and some&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/world\/russian-president-humiliated-again-by-being-made-to-wait-for-kyrgyzstan-president-11663307039754.html\">embarrassing<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eastasiaforum.org\/2022\/10\/17\/russias-setback-in-samarkand\/\">prickly exchanges<\/a>&nbsp;with Central Asian leaders at the last meeting in Samarkand in September 2022.
