Given two events last week, this might also succinctly describe the rise of robot warfighting. A swarm of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/politics\/federal\/aussie-cardboard-drones-used-in-attack-on-russian-airfield-20230829-p5e0bv.html\">Australian-made cardboard drones<\/a>&nbsp;attacked a Russian airbase and the US Department of Defence&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/3507514\/hicks-underscores-us-innovation-in-unveiling-strategy-to-counter-chinas-militar\/\">announced plans<\/a>&nbsp;to build thousands of warfighting robots and bring them quickly into operational service. Machines have been increasingly used in wars for more than a century now but suddenly it looks like a new phase is abruptly upon us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside Russia, the attack of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kyivpost.com\/post\/21035\">angry cardboard boxes<\/a>\u00a0is not really news, even if they may have destroyed several fast jet aircraft. The use of drones has steadily escalated since the start of the Ukraine war and there are now thousands deployed almost daily.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-08-29\/russia-ukraine-drone-warfare-five-ways-combat-will-change\/102782938\">Their use<\/a>\u00a0for surveillance, reconnaissance, resupply and attack is commonplace. Forming\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mil.in.ua\/en\/news\/ukrainian-navy-creates-a-brigade-of-naval-drones\/\">dedicated military units<\/a>\u00a0to operate them is unremarkable. Familiarity has hidden that this is the first major robot war and is setting the path for all future conflicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second event has brought this into sharp relief.
