Topic of the month: International Data Week 2025

International Data Week 2025 (IDW 2025) invites researchers, software specialists and data professionals to join a global conversation on how data can drive positive change. This year’s theme, ‘Data for Positive Change: Empowering Communities and Advancing Research’, brings together global experts from academia, industry and government to explore ethical, inclusive and innovative uses of data. The international conference, hosted by CODATA, Research Data Alliance (RDA), World Data System (WDS) and Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC), runs from 13 to 16 October in Brisbane.

Key topics include:

  • CAREful Indigenous data governance: Explore how the CARE principles (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, Ethics) support Indigenous data sovereignty and foster equitable partnerships.
  • Rigorous, responsible and reproducible science: Discover how FAIR data and artificial intelligence can accelerate research while maintaining scientific integrity through transdisciplinary collaboration and responsible data practices.
  • Open research and federated systems: Explore how federated data infrastructures are enabling global collaboration through interoperable platforms, shared metadata standards and secure data exchange. Griffith Research Online (GRO) is a great example of infrastructure for open data.
  • Empowering the global data community: Engage with leaders working to bridge digital divides and promote equity in data access, especially across the Global South. This session will co-create strategies to overcome linguistic and resource barriers.

IDW 2025 is a unique opportunity for researchers, information technology and data specialists to connect, learn and contribute to shaping a data-driven future that benefits both research and society. View the full program and registration details for more information.
