Tip of the week: It’s never too early to start building your professional profile

Social media is great for fun and connection, but did you know you can also use it as a career booster? Professional networking platforms like LinkedIn let you showcase your skills, connect with people in your field and build your professional identity. You don’t have to wait until you graduate to get started, building a profile while you’re still studying can help give you a head start.

Make your profile stand out
Your profile is your online first impression. A clear, friendly and professional photo and a headline that highlights your skills and ambitions go a long way. For example:

Software Engineering Student | Python & Java Enthusiast
Marketing Student | Social Media & Content Creator
Midwifery Student | Committed to Woman-Centred Care

Grow your network
Start with classmates, lecturers, and mentors. Then follow industry leaders to stay up to date. The LinkedIn Top Voices lists are a great place to find people worth following.

Share your experiences
Post about your projects, placements or volunteer work. Even short reflections show what you’re learning and help others see your interests and strengths.

Interact with purpose
Engage with your connections’ posts, add genuine comments and keep things professional. It’s about building relationships, not just collecting connections.

Start small
You don’t need a perfect profile right away. Begin with the basics, connect with a few people, and share when you can. Over time, those small steps add up.
