{"id":13685,"date":"2020-02-11T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-10T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/griffithlibrary.wordpress.com\/?p=13685"},"modified":"2020-04-17T14:36:47","modified_gmt":"2020-04-17T04:36:47","slug":"international-day-of-women-and-girls-in-science-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/testblogs.griffith.edu.au\/library\/2020\/02\/11\/international-day-of-women-and-girls-in-science-2\/","title":{"rendered":"International Day of Women and Girls in Science"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>According to UNESCO, less than 30 per cent of scientific and technological researchers are women.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Griffith Library is celebrating our history of fostering female representation in science and technology while looking at how we can create an inclusive and sustainable research hub for women in STEM.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>A step through time<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13687\" src=\"https:\/\/griffithlibrary.files.wordpress.com\/2020\/02\/ipswich-high-school.jpg?w=590\" alt=\"Debra Cunningham at graduation as Griffith's first science graduate\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In 1978, Debra Cunningham was not only Griffith\u2019s first science graduate \u2013 she was also the first recipient of an undergraduate degree!\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13689\" src=\"https:\/\/griffithlibrary.files.wordpress.com\/2020\/02\/ipswich-high-school-resize.jpg?w=590\" alt=\"Ipswich High School girls in 1980s\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In the 1980s, Griffith promoted science within South-East Queensland high schools. These girls from Ipswich High School are participating in a biomedical experiment.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13690\" src=\"https:\/\/griffithlibrary.files.wordpress.com\/2020\/02\/marina-resize.jpg?w=590\" alt=\"Marina Perry with Aviation studies award\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In 1999, Marina Perry was awarded an Aviation Studies award.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong><em>That&#8217;s RAD! Science<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u2013 a Griffith-led initiative.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>That&#8217;s RAD! Science\u00a0<\/em>is a children\u2019s book series that promotes STEM careers for children, particularly young girls.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Titles from the series include:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10072\/390547\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">My mum is a parasite scientist. That\u2019s RAD!<\/a>\u00a0(2017)\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10072\/390548\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Our mum is a nanotech scientist. That\u2019s RAD!<\/a>\u00a0(2018)\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10072\/390549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Our mum is a forensic scientist. That\u2019s RAD!<\/a>\u00a0(2018)\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10072\/390550\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">My aunt is a protein crystal scientist. That\u2019s RAD!<\/a>\u00a0(2019)\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Researching gender inequality<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In recent years, Griffith researchers have provided keen insights into gender inequality within STEM and possible ways to balance the gender gap.
